GVCB is looking for a conductor for our Junior Band
The Junior Band rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. at St. Andrew’s School. It is designed for adult learners playing concert band music at level 1– 2 (approximately middle school level). It’s an ideal band for those learning a second instrument, picking up an instrument after a long hiatus, or advancing beginners. The band usually performs a few concerts per year, but their primary focus is the joy of learning music and playing in an ensemble.
The conductor will be expected to prepare weekly practice lists for the band and lead rehearsals from the beginning of September through the end of the following June, including picking repertoire (with input from the band members). GVCB has a library of appropriate Junior Band sheet music scores. Additionally, the GVCB executive usually apportions a modest amount from the annual budget to distribute to conductors for new music. The Junior Band gives several public performances during the season, typically in late November or early December and then later in the following spring.
Each band has an elected manager among its members, so the conductor can expect help in communicating with the band and consulting about any issues that arise, including the scheduling of concerts. Though not official voting members of the GVCB executive board, the conductors of the organization are encouraged to participate in monthly executive meetings, which are usually conducted via Zoom. Their input is valued by the organization.
Qualified applicants are expected to have a music degree and/or relevant conducting experience with other orchestral or concert band organizations. Because the Junior Band is a group for adult learners, teaching certification would be an asset.
The Junior Band conductor will be given an honorarium of $2950.00, to be divided into monthly payments over the course of the season. The contract will be for one year, with GVCB reserving the option to renew for a term of three years thereafter, pending approval of the band’s members.
